I got the idea for a spinach smoothie from blaqberry’s super-rad journal as well as from the website goneraw. (While I’m not thinking moving to an all-raw food diet, you can get tons of great vegitarian and vegan food ideas from these sources.
Everyone knows that spinach is good for you. Heck, it’s known as a “super food.” Packed with vitamins, calcium, iron and cancer fighting agents.
I actually like spinach, both cooked and raw. However, it’s great that it can be added into a smoothie – you can get a lot more of it that way and it bluks up the smoothie without adding fat and calories.
The best part? Kids will drink it! Why? Because it doesn’t taste like spinach. In fact if it weren’t bright green you’d never know there was a bit of spinach inside! I gave it to my toddler two morning in a row.
(Please excuse the horrible camera-phone pictures, I was without my camera and had to use the cell phone camera – you’re about to see a few more posts with horrid photos, sorry about that!)
Directions:
2 cups or more of raw spinach.
1 banana
5 strawberries
(I like to use dates to sweeten things, but you can also use sugar or a sugar sub)

Add one to two cups water – blend to your heart’s content.
It tastes like banana and strawberry – and not like leafy greens at all. I think the bright green color is fun! And so does Leo.
Now – getting it into a sippy cup! After you’ve poured some for yourself – leave some in the blender, add more water, blend on HIGH – pour through a strainer and into a sippy cup!
New feature alert – when I can I’m going to post nutritional info as well. I found a wonderful website that lets you build a recipe and it spits out a professional looking food label for you :

Great Recipe and Site!
I am really into green juices lately. It’s a nice change from always coming up with creative cooked veggies for my family.
These are great for youth athletes. It’s my secret weapon for my daughter. I put the smoothie or juice in a paper cup with a top so she doesn’t see what it looks like,Iworks well for me too!
Again thanks for a great site!

Strainer? I’d think you’d want to be eating everything, otherwise you’re not really eating “whole foods” anymore, its more processed and potentially leaving out something good…
June 2, 2008 at 1:35 am
Tom – thanks for commenting! If you read carefully you’ll see the use of the strainer is only a tip for serving the smoothie to a toddler in a sippy cup – it will not be able to go through the sippy cup top until you strain it and chunks are not good for small children – the strainer is not meant for adults of course or for older children who can drink from a cup.

avocado and strawberry smoothies are great also.
your smoothie is even richer and a tad more caloric (and colon friendlier too (get those bowels moving or the colon rollin’) if you add soymilk.
i’m going to try and get me a juicer again and make carrot juice and see if i can’t somehow make a carrot smoothie.

This smoothie is amazing, my boyfriend even liked it and I have to buy him caramel dip to get him to eat apples! I tried it with raspberries and banana too and it worked out great, better served chilled!

My fave smoothie right now is:
3-4 cubes ice, crushed
1 handful cashews, crushed
1 handful flaxseeds
3 large handfuls of spinach
1 banana
1/2 orange, peeled and sectioned
a big squirt of real lemon juice
1/4 c. diet 7-up
(makes 2 smoothies)
It’s really sweet and yummy. You need not add the 7-up if you replace it with juice or water, but it makes the smoothie a little bit effervescent, which is nice.

Hi. Very pleasant info on Maqui Berry. I happened upon your nice blog while searching yahoo. For the previous few days I have been attempting to find more. Particularly anything to do with the dieting babble. I’ve seen it all and my best friend continues promoting her recent weight loss fad on me. So I am grateful I discovered you. Best regards!

Great to kick start your family everyday – This is for 4-5 servings (blender full)
Watch the calories on some items (even though it is good for you) – split between 3-5 people – not so many calories per person.
I had been juicing spinach and still do, but I feel that too much of the spinach is wasted. My favorite smoothie is:
2-3 cups of blueberries (organic)
1 banana (the closer to “overripe” the better) lot of calories so only one
1 scoop of protein (Whey)
1 scoop of flax seed (organic) – lot of calories
1.5 cups of keifer (lot of calories)
2 cups of triple washed organic spinach or baby spinach
3-4 table spoons of organic apple cider vinager (Braggs)
3 tablespoons of organic (from Spain) Olive Oil (cold press) (lot of calories)
Blend all my regular vitamins into this because I think they may be absorbed in my body better (I am not a scientist or doctor).
Sometimes I put a tablespoon of cocoa powder (pure)- very good for you and the items above act as the sweetner.
You can also add a mango, apple or strawberries

Just started the spinach smoothie thing and a friend gave me her receipe. Let me know what you think of it:
I put some water, 2 chunks of pineapple, 2 handfuls of berries (black or blue), one lime and 2 handfuls of spinach, a chunk of ginger and a carrot it I have it. I drink one a day. Sometimes I put in banana but not often. I use a vitamix which lives to be a smoothie maker. The key is the lime it covers the earthy spinach and makes it taste rather sweet.

Sounds great!! I love the lime idea!!
