What is onigiri? Simply put it is a ball of rice, most often witih something sour or salty inside of it. They are also mostly triangle shaped but I like round ones myself. It is a very popular lunch in Japan. For more information visit the greatest place on the web for information: Wikipedia Link
I made these fresh for our lunches. The night before I baked some salmon with lots of spices, flaked it, and put it in the fridge. In the morning I made 2 cups of rice with the rice maker. Make sure to use “sushi rice” so that it’s nice and sticky!
Once your rice is cooked, put it in a big bowl and fan it out to let it cool off. You don’t want to burn your hands! While making your onigiri you will want to keep your hands wet with salt water so the rice doesn’t stick to your hands too much.
- Place some of the rice in the palm of your hand (the amound depends on how big you want your onigiri to be.
- Place your fillin in the center
- Cover with more rice
- Shape the rice in a ball using the palms of your hands to roll it.
- Wrap with a long strip of nori or roll in seeds or Furikake
